SELF-PORTAIT (MAY 1890)
- how has the paint been used?
“To exaggerate the fairness of hair, I come even to orange tones, chromes and pale yellow … I make a plain background of the richest, intensest blue that I can contrive, and by this simple combination of the bright head against the rich blue background, I get a mysterious effect, like a star in the depths of an azure sky.”
-how has the brush been used?
Looked at closely, individual brush strokes and colors are clearly seen. The brush strokes are purposeful; run in one direction within each section (such as his beard) made with pure colours placed side by side. From a short distance away the colours blend visually.
-what types of colours dose he use?
He used complementary colors side by side to make each seem brighter – yellows and oranges with blues and reds with greens.
-what dose his mood look like
That’s a subjective asessment – he seems pensive to me, but you can elaborate on that in any way the picture affects you.
-What do you think he i trying to say about himself?
Hard to say; I doubt we can really know any artist’s intentions just from viewing a work of art. His letters might offer more insights.
He said he loved nature. He painted with passion (laying the paint on quickly – which to me transmits a sense of urgency or vibrancy, at least). I am not sure his intention was to say anything about himself; nevertheless his paintings and writings together give us some idea of the emotions and values that motivated him.
“Painted portraits have a life of their own, something that comes from the roots of the painter’s soul, which a machine cannot touch. The more often people look at photos, the more they will feel this, it seems to me.”
(Letter from Vincent van Gogh to his brother, Theo van Gogh, from Antwerp, c.15 December 1885.)
