Is there a difference between ultrasuede, microsuede, Doro suede upholstery fabric?
I want to re-upholster my family room sofa in some sort of microsuede or ultrasuede fabric that will be very durable. I keep runnng into all sorts of names for it–microsuede, ultrasuede, Doro suede, Toray. They are all different prices also. Is it all the same or is there a difference? What would be the best type to upholster a couch that gets a lot of use?
Some are just generic names for suedes while D’Oro Suede, Passion Suede, etc. are all the names for the suede line offered by specific mills/companies. The difference in quality can be great as some microfibers are thin and have a directional nap while others are made to withstand heavy duty residential or contract use. Some are knit-backed or may meet more commercial regulations. Ask the suppliers about the different qualities of each pattern as they are made for different markets and price points. If you’re considering reu-upholstering, you should definitely choose a fabric that is worth putting on to your sofa frame, if that is also worth reupholstering. For heavy use, I would recommend something with no directional nap and a higher double-rub count. I have used Passion Suede and D’Oro Suede and would choose D’Oro Suede for its durability and because I don’t like the directional nap that Passion Suede has. Fabric price often correlates with quality so be prepared for a wide range of prices.
