Stickles Glitter

Go to any yard sale, Goodwill or any second-hand store, and you will find loads of books for next to nothing. Did you know that you can make those forlorn books into beautiful flowers for your scrapbook pages and cards? It’s so easy and takes just a few minutes.

If you are the least bit worried about the book paper having acidic content, this can be easily checked by using a pH tester pen. Make a mark on a part of the paper you will not be using and check the color of the ink. The pen will have instructions on it telling you what color the ink becomes if there is acid in the paper. If there is acid in your paper, definitely do not use it in your scrapbook album without treating the paper first. The handiest method is to treat the paper with Make It Acid Free spray from Krylon. It is a simple spray that dries quickly after being applied. There are other methods to neutralize acid in paper, but they can be very messy and time consuming.

The first step is to rip out a few pages from the book. Then trim the white paper from around the edges. You will now need a scalloped circle punch. A great size is 1 7/8 inches. Punch out 16 circles and put them in a stack. You do not need to take time to line up the edges. (After all, flowers in nature are not symmetrical either.) After your scalloped circles are in a neat stack, punch a hole through the center of the whole pile with a large needle or paper piercer. Place a mini scrapbooking brad through the hole and fold the prongs in the back to hold everything together.

Starting with the top scalloped layer, wrinkle it in towards the center, I call it scrunching! Take each additional layer one at a time and wrinkle it up toward the center. Every scalloped layer is wrinkled up until you get to the bottom 4. They do not need to be wrinkled and provide an excellent flat layer to attach the flower to your project.

After each layer has been wrinkled, then flatten them down slightly. This will make a Chrysanthemum-type flower that is great looking on your projects! From here, you can lightly press the flower into Ranger Distress Ink Pads, or glitter them with Stickles Glitter Glue. Even the plain flowers look wonderful and you will be using up formerly unloved books that otherwise end up in the landfill.
