Mounted TV and components set up?
We recently bought a 42 inch flat screen LCD TV and we want to mount it on our wall. We want everything to look sleek so we were thinking about putting our components such as satellite box, Blueray dvd player, receiver and PS2 in a nearby closet. I don’t know much about this. Would this be an expensive route? The closet is about 15-20 feet away from the TV. How would you control the components without having to point the remote at the open closet each time? We are not going for an elaborate home theater. We have a very small house with two children and we just want to clear the clutter in our small living room.
Make sure the electronic boxes are well ventilated – they will produce considerable heat.
The next problem is that 15 to 20 feet is a long way to send high bandwidth video signals – you will probably experience some degradation of HDTV quality. I would not recommend this.
For control, you can buy an IR remote repeater: a small device that sits in your living room, detects IR pulses from any remote, and re-transmits them as low power radio signals. A companion device would be placed in your closet. It receives the radio signals and converts them back to IR light pulses to operate your equipment. I believe that stores such as Radio Shack and perhaps Best Buy carry these.
