How do I wire 20 amp receptacles with 12/2 wire which has a red/black/and ground wire?
If I have wired my 20 amp kitchen receptacles with 12/2 wire which only has a red, black, and ground wire, do I use the red wire for a neutral and the black as a hot?
It is only 12/2 and not 12/3. There is no white wire. Just a red, black and bare ground.
The red for hot black neutral.
Edit: He’s right about marking it with tape. I have seen red/black several times in older buildings. In houses it was common for 220V but of course not 12 ga. The reason I said red for hot is that red was used to indicate hot from the main electrical source. That could be from the building or if it was a switched source in a piece of equipment. It meant that it would only be hot if the main power was on. If the source was not from thae primary source. For instance it has a seperate breaker from the equipment it is mounted on it should be yellow. An example would be lights inside equipment for maintenance that could be turned on with the equipment power off.
