If you’re ever unfortunate enough to find yourself stranded on a desert island, a good communications strategy can effectively improve your chances of survival. So, if you don’t know your Yamana from your Noon Gun it’s time to start swotting up; after all you don’t know when your knowledge of communications strategies will come in handy.
When you find yourself stranded on a desert island, most people’s first thoughts turn to how they’re going to get themselves rescued. Actually the majority of people marooned on a desert island are saved within two days. So whilst your first thoughts should be about survival methods, having knowledge of communications strategies can help to speed up the process.
In the movies, you may have seen castaways scrawling SOS in the sand with a stick, and whilst this is an effective measure, you may be interested to know that the international signal of distress is actually a triangle. While walking around the island try to uncover some large rocks or sticks that could be seen from the air, and place these into a triangular shape. It may be handy to learn that while one signal fire is useful, three fires in this same triangular formation are actually equated with distress. So, rather than just creating one fire, a better communications strategy would be to have the three together.
The idea of creating a fire is all very well but, unless you’re stranded with a box of matches in your back pocket, it can be easier said than done. If you happen to be stranded with some supplies, a simple but effective way to create a fire is with a battery and some steel wool. Touch both terminals of the battery to the steel wool and use the resulting spark to light some nearby tinder.
Without supplies, the bow method is an effective way to create a fire. Simply take a bendy stick and create a bow shape. Tie grass and vines around this bow then find a sturdy stick and wrap the string of the bow around this in a loop. Find a rock or a stone with a hole in it and hold it in your hand whilst placing the top of the stick into the notch. Place the other end of the stick into the notch in the other piece of wood. Pull the bow back and forth, making the stick spin in the notch to make enough friction to create an ember from the bottom wood. Take that ember, and put it into your gathered tinder and blow on it, making a flame. With that flame, you can catch larger sticks alight, and create a nice fire. Now you’ve created your fire, you can start working on your communications strategy!
Smoke signals are an age-old communications strategy and were first used in the days of ancient China. The idea of a signal fire is to create a thick, heavy smoke; this can be done by throwing living plants onto the fire. Search your pockets for any leftover coppers as your loose change is pretty useful on a desert island. Throwing penny pieces into a fire produces green flames, an anomaly that might help get you noticed. Driftwood also produces unusual coloured flames, which may help ships and aircraft to spot you.
It’s good to remember that any anomalies are your key to getting spotted. Moving rocks into a weird position; wearing bright colours; or using reflective surfaces like mirrors, are all effective communications strategies that may help you to save you from your desert island marooning.
