How do you make polka dots in a bedroom wall?
What do you need to make it, and where do you get the supplies? We are planning to use this brown paper (carpet protectant for house painting bought at Home Depot) and we think that it will bleed through. Any tips on painting polka dots
If the paper is sold as paint protector, it should work.
Polka dots: if you want them very sharp edged, buy a piece of stencilling paper from Home Depot or a craft shop. This paper will also not bleed through, and is fairly stiff. Mark and cut out the size of hole you want, a drink glass could be a good template.
Draw light chalk lines on the wall both ways, at the spacing you want for the dots. Centre the stencil hole where two lines meet. Dab the polka dot colour through the hole with a sponge or dryish brush. Continue for whole wall. When paint is dry, brush off the chalk lines.
If you want RANDOM dots, they might look better in 2 or 3 different sizes. Place some largest ones roughly equal distance apart, at varying heights, on the whole wall area. Stand back and see how many more are needed. Then fill between them with medium ones, then finally “scatter” smaller ones to fill any unbalanced gaps still left.The sizes need not be the same colour; shades of the same would look good.
Random is easier to do, if you have an eye for balance, but gives a more festive/casual effect. The neatly lined up ones are more work (for the marking up) but would look more formal. On a rough or uneven surface, random would hide the flaws better.
If you are happy with rough-edged dots, you can use a potato stencil. Trim down one end of a large potato to a cylinder shape. Slice off the end. Dip the cut end into a thin layer of paint or roll it along the paint-loaded roller. Apply to the wall with a smooth slightly rocking or circular motion. When the results start to be messy, take a thin slice off the potato. A bedroom wall might take 4 to 6 potatoes to finish. Once you have the shape right, trim a few grooves into the “handle” end of the spud for your fingernails, so you get a good grip.
