The right necklace added to any outfit can be the perfect pièce de résistance. For women all around the world, accessorizing is an important part of dressing and is all about making a stylish statement. The range of jewelery and in particular necklaces, has never been larger and harder to select from and that is why I always recommend choosing a beautiful vintage necklace to complete your look.
The reason for this is not only can you be guaranteed no one else will be wearing something similar, but, they are visually stunning, often made from gorgeous colors, you just wont get with the latest collections. What contributes to the uniqueness of a vintage necklace, are the colors, the style, and the materials, most of which are generally made of thermoset, lucite, or rhinestones.
Thermoset and Lucite are both different varieties of thermo- plastics and when searching for these vintage pieces it is important to remember, they were most popular in the 1950′s and 1960′s. If you want something bright and colorful, that will really stand out, then a thermoset necklace is definitely the way to go. The great thing about these necklaces, is they can be worn more casually then the rhinestone pieces that are also very popular.
Rhinestones are a natural occurring phenomenon found in river beds.The original rhinestones, were rock crystals gathered from the River Rhine, hence the name. Today a rhinestone is rarely from the Rhine as the resource was severely depleted and scientists came up with more and better ways to create rhinestones. Scientists eventually started making rhinestones from glass, paste or gem quartz and the highest quality rhinestones that can be bought today are made from quartz crystal.
Rhinestone necklaces are probably the easiest vintage necklace to find and you can also find these in a variety of colors, although they will not be as brightly colored as the thermoset and lucite pieces. Rhinestone necklaces are dressier, as they are simple elegant pieces that are designed to be worn with gowns and fancy dresses. The perfect accessory for a wedding outfit, whether you are the bride or just an attendee. When wearing rhinestone necklaces you might have one that is considered an Aurora Borealis rhinestone.
In 1775 an Alsatian jeweler by the name of Georg Friedrich Strass had the idea to imitate diamonds by coating the lower side of glass with metal powder. Which is why rhinestones are called often called Strass in many European languages. In 1955, the Aurora Borealis or Aqua aura, a thin, vacuum-sputtered metallic coating applied to crystal stones to produce an iridescent effect, was introduced. (possibly by Swarovski, I couldn’t find a definite answer on this one, but it does seem they were responsible) Aurora Borealis tends to reflect whatever color is worn near it, and that is why it was named after the Aurora Borealis atmospheric phenomenon, also known as the “Northern Lights”
An Aurora Borealis rhinestone necklace is the closest thing you can get when wanting to recreate a diamond effect, many people wont even be able to tell the difference. They are a beautiful choice and perfect for someone who doesn’t have the money to buy real diamonds. Vintage necklaces in this style are also very easy to find and I find they go best with a classic little black dress as the sparkle against the black dress really stands out.
Regardless of where your rhinestones were produced, what style or color, you will need to handle them carefully to guard against damage. While storing your rhinestones, never place them face-to-face because they will easily scratch; always store them separately or place tissue between the rhinestone pieces. To clean your rhinestones, carefully apply a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.

How can I finish off my bird bathroom?
I am living in an apartment and I have the floral toile print shower curtain from Target. It is really pretty and I have brown towels, and aqua towels. I want to put a piece of art or something homemade to add above the towel bar. I live in a remote community in Alaska and so I can’t just go to the local store. I do know how to do basic embroidery, and I want to make my bathroom pretty. Any suggestions??
