How to set a price on a painting?
never sold before… but I do have a price in mind after looking at other’s work in the market. I’d like to get it registered but to put the value on the certificate, do I need someone professional to appraise the painting ?

If I read your question correctly, it does not sound like you have a large body of work, since you only want to register this one painting. And having no sales history, an appraisal will be challenging. Unless you have a history of achievement both in sales, showing, and gallery time, getting one painting appraised so you can register it for copyright might be a little premature. You are copyright protected even without an appraisal, you know. And comparing your work to another artist, especially if you have no sales or showing history, might prove to be less than accurate.
It is one of the most difficult aspects of being an artist, this putting of a dollar figure on one of our works. Most beginning artists (or at least “beginning to sell”) find this frustrating and challenging. I want to pass on some pricing advice from Robert Genn forwarded to me by the only artist in my circle who gets $7,500 on average for her commissioned portraits: http://painting.about.com/od/careerdevelopment/a/RGennArtPricing.htm This is a different article that the one in answer #2. Robert Genn may be a little more tongue-in-cheek in his assessment, but I do think it is wise to keep your prices somewhat consistent by size.
