How do I wash my saddle pad?

I had a saddle pad given to me, but it is filthy. Whats the best way to get it clean? It’s just an older western pad nothing special. Can I just put it in the washer?

Washing it shouldn’t be an issue. As long as the fabric of the pad is in good condition (no rips or tears), it can be washed in the washing machine. However, if this filth has been accumulated over a long time, it can actually compromise the quality of the fabric, so if you are uncertain, you may not want to run it through the machine. You can also spray it down outside with a water hose; and I would suggest using a horse shampoo to clean it (as it’s probably “horse grime” on the pad, so this will be great for taking it off as well as be a gentle cleaner so that you can ensure it wouldn’t cause allergies for your horse).

Making certain the pad is sufficiently dry will be the larger issue. It should be in the sun – if you have a saddle rack or something similar that will allow air to reach both sides, that would be ideal, or you can lay it out on the grass (with towels or a sheet underneath to protect it from becoming grimy again). It will take at least a day, and possibly longer, to dry, depending on the thickness.

It’s a lot of work for a used saddle pad. Unless it is especially nice, I would probably just purchase a new one.
