Why did artists put rings around the heads of people in Gothic Art and mosaics?
I was recently studying the Mosaics of Ravenna, from the Hagia Sophia. The people in the mosaics had rings or circles around their heads. I noticed that many paintings or mosaics from the Gothic art had this as well. Is there a significance to this?
Many artists used this ring called a nimbus or halo to signify holiness they would be given to saints Christ and the virgin mary
also a cool fact is that jesus is always depicted with a cross or three points in his nimbus.
