Have you ever decided to take a trip away from home to enjoy the great fishing at some far away location? I live in southwestern Ontario, situated right in between Lake St Clair and Lake Erie. I have gone off on several fishing trips in the more northerly areas of Ontario to take a whack at the fishing in a few of these tourist wonderlands.
I realize that there is always one conclusion when I think about my experiences at home and away from home. When I leave home to go fishing somewhere else, I am leaving behind me some of the very best fishing in the world. Yes, I really enjoy getting away to a fresh area for a short period. I must say though that far too often, the fishing does not rate up there with the fishing in my own backyard.
I was a charter fishing guide and captain for 15 years. I competed in many fishing tournaments in which I either won or placed very respectably in the final standings. I think my opinion in these discussions are fairly credible and I think many other area fishermen would share my feelings about this issue.
I am surrounded with top grade fishing opportunities. I can drive 15 mile north to Lake St Clair to the entrance to the Detroit River. Lake St Clair hosts one of the top fishable populations of muskies that range from large numbers of juveniles to extremely consistent catches of trophy size wall hangers. This lake also calls itself home to a huge population of the ever popular small mouth bass. Numerous local fishing tournaments involve lake St Clair waters for walleye, musky and small mouth bass. The Detroit River hosts a terrific spring run of walleyes to start of the fishing year right at ice out time.
If I want to travel 10 miles to the south I can enjoy the bounty of Lake Erie. The western Lake Erie fishing offers arguably the best walleye fishing anywhere in the world. Follow the walleye from the shallows in US waters in the early spring to the deeper waters on the Canadian side to the north and northeast. The islands of western Lake Erie consistently offer walleye fishing and small mouth bass.
Move out away from the shore a bit and experience some great perch fishing. This fish has made a great comeback in Lake Erie in the past five years. If you want to move just east of Point Pelee where the water depths are greater, you can experience days that offer catch limits of exciting rainbow trout. The numbers can roll in big on a good day and many fish exceeding 10-12 pounds are going into fish boxes.
In conclusion, if I want to catch big fish, large numbers and a wide range of species, should I go on a fishing trip? I do not need to think about this one too long. Common sense slams the answer to that question right into my face.

I would say any of the 4 water parks in Sandusky! Kallihari is the biggest and I love it there! So do my kids!
