Who gets to choose which countries a movie is first released in? The director or the studios?
Or is it maybe a combination of both? An example… Peter Jackson’s new movie ‘The Lovely Bones’ is being released in New Zealand and Australia before any other countries in the world. Is this because he is a New Zealand director and it’s his decision? Or did the studios just allow him to choose New Zealand because thats where he is from?
Well it depends on the country, how revered the director is, and how lenient the studio is.
Jackson is famous as hell, and he can do whatever the f&&& he damn well pleases.
Also, Jackson has a fetish for NZ.
He really gets off on it, which is actually pretty annoying.
In this case, it’s his decision.
But in smaller films, it’s the studio, for sure.
The more famous the director, the more power he has.
If it’s a first-timer, chances are they will have NO control over distribution as well as certain other factors of the film.
