These are embellishments you stick on your cards. They are the quickest and easiest way to make your cards unique. You can buy them either online or in your local craft store, however, it is always great fun to create your own handmade card toppers. This article goes into the basics of creating them.
You can make a whole range of these embellishments whenever you the time, so that when you need a card in a hurry, you can simply take one of your toppers and attach it to the front of your blank card and hey presto, a beautiful handmade card!
The Base
You’ll want some medium weight card stock for the base as that way it will be strong enough to hold its shape when you mount it on the card with foam mounting blocks.
A great shape to use as the base is a rectangle that’s about 6 by 8 centimeters. Another size that is becoming very popular is a one inch square. These are called “Inches” and are even being traded online. Putting three different ‘inches’ side by side on a card is a design that works really well.
To cut the base you’ll either need a one inch square hole punch, or a craft knife and a self-healing mat, along with a ruler to measure the size.
Decorating Your Handmade Card Toppers
If you’ve decided to create several ‘inches’, then you can buy loads of different inches rubber stamps from Inkadinkado. If you get the clear acrylic stamps you can get whole themed sets, from Christmas sets to Halloween sets, or sets that are all to do with cats or flowers and so on.
If you’ve gone with a single larger card topper, you can decorate it with just about any embellishments you want. Lightly inking the sides of the topper can really make the design on the topper stand out.
You want to make sure that whatever you’re decorating your topper with matches the color of the base or is a complementary color to the base. This means yellow and purple, red and green or blue and orange.
Where To Place Toppers On A Card
The most ideal place for toppers on a card is intersecting the line that delineates the top third of the card. If you’re using “inches’ put three of them side by side along this line for a great design. Alternatively another design that works is placing them one above the other down the center line of the card.
