False grant writing providers have been around probably as long as grant writing itself. In recent years they have been on the upswing, however. Three factors partly explain this: the economic downturn, the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (the Stimulus Act), and the growth in nonprofit organizations.
Illegitimate service providers imply that traditional ways of getting funds in a down economy do not work. Therefore, organizations need to turn to them because they have the knowhow to rise above everyone else to get these elusive funds. The Stimulus Act, on the other hand, allows them to stress that a boatload of money is available and they are especially equipped to get some for you. The growth in nonprofits over the past two decades has been massive and this can only increase opportunities for fraud in the grant writing sphere.
Offers of grant money are all over the Internet and elsewhere. The Nevada Attorney General’s office recently reported that small businesses in Las Vegas have been receiving unsolicited faxes from a service telling them that grant money is available and no applicant has been turned down in ten years. But first the businesses must pay the service $2,500. The Attorney General’s office is advising organizations to get to know any service they’re dealing with before spending money to get money.
A recently surfaced grant writing firm promoted a fundraising seminar in Seattle, featuring a “well known” speaker known as “The Money Man.” The seminar was canceled when the police found that the well known speaker was a convicted felon.
The firm, which has used at least ten other aliases, according to the FBI, told small businesses in the Seattle-Bellevue area that they would research and apply for federal grants on their behalf for a fee of $3,000. After the businesses paid the fee, the outfit closed its operations and skipped town.
Ministries and Churches are Targets
Many of the high profile grant schemes of late involve businesses. But as the primary beneficiaries of grant funding, nonprofits must especially be on guard. The following is a recent email sent to some Christian ministries:
“Dear Beloved in Christ,Calvary meetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Our Savior….I am old I have no family no kids, I lost my wife and my only two kids in a motor accident two years ago it’s sad for me right now, I am very ill with cancer, doctors says I have a short time to live, I have decided to give my wealth to an honest person that can use it to glorify the name of the Lord. After I received instruction from my God to use these funds to do God’s work and to give to charity home, I prayed to God for direction and he has been directing me, I told God I want a ministry, or an honest person who will spend the fund for things that will glorify His name…after the death of my late wife and when I was told about my illness I have to sell our properties which amounted to $26.7 million US dollars which I deposited with the finance committee in Europe for safety purpose, if anything happens to me this funds will be impounded. Can you use this funds for the Kingdom’s work and for charity organization? As I believe within the next three weeks I will not be alive”
A deathbed wish to glorify God and help charities! Your ministry or church could do great things with these funds. But you would never see them. This transaction was meant to get funds from you, not for you.
Illegitimate service providers make all kinds of offers. They may be once-in-a-life-time, no brainer offers, or limited time offers, requiring you to act quickly. They are often may be vague about how or where they get the grants or claim some secret or classified information that cannot be revealed. Or they may put on an air of sharing inside information with you as long as you don’t reveal it to others making the individual feel special.
They may go by a company name that sounds legitimate…or feign dedication to your mission…or flatter you in some way…or provide fake credentials to dissuade you from checking up on them through such business watchdog organizations as the Better Business Bureau.

How is one assured of the correct crimp on a jacketed bullet with no cannelure?
The crimp on a bullet with a cannelure can be measured with a caliper but, not on a jacketed bullet, in my experience. The jacket will not yield, perceptibly, when applying the crimp. This is important when the cartridge head spaces on the case mouth. Improper crimp can cause pressure problems but, if you understand the question you already know that.

Take a loaded round and push the point of the bullet against a hard object like a piece of wood. If the bullet does not move with moderate pressure the crimp is good. Over crimping is bad, so start with a crimp you think might not be quite enough, and always use a taper crimp. If the bullet moves, use your bullet puller to remove the bullet and start with another sized case and keep checking until it is right.
I’ve found Glocks to be particularly sensitive to crimping problems, but I still love my Glocks…
