how do some fashion movements/trends convey meaning?
i’m thinking along the lines of ancient romans wearing purple to suggest wealth/royalty; victorians/georgians (i always forget which) wearing huge wigs to display higher levels of social importance; and perhaps hippies wearing hemp and other organic materials to feel ‘closer’ to the earth? sorry to get deep..
anyway. can anyone suggest any other examples of things like this? i’m writing an essay on how what someone wears can say a lot about their personality, or what they believe in, etc..
In fashion design school, I learned the phrase “Fashion is an expression of a place and time in a culture”; For as long as there have been clothes, there have been social significance affiliated with them.
What you are describing with the wealth and royalty, having elaborate garments not only took up more space, but also didn’t allow the wearer much movement. Only the very wealthy could pretty much stand around and not being doing any labor, therefore, the larger and more elaborate the clothing, the more it signified that the wearer was not doing any manual labor, and had the finances to afford such things, such as the clothing, wigs, jewelry and the caretakers to dress them.
In recent history, there is a lot of theory about how women’s fashion changed from 1900-1980 based on the roles for women. It’s very interesting, in times when roles for women were the most strict, the clothing was also the most constricting. ie: Victorian, tight corsets, strict roles for women. 1920′s – “flapper” dresses, looser clothing and more freedom for women. 1940′s, women wearing pants in world war 2, more freedom… If you like history that’s one thing to look in to
Another big example on clothing showing one’s beliefs: Very often clothing is used as a form of protest. Here in Louisville, there was many creative attempts to show a distaste for the school dress code. here is a link: http://www.historybox.com/html/creative.htm
Hope this helps!
