Can someone describe Satin Faced Taffeta for me?
Theres a dress I love and want to buy from online. It says its made from satin faced taffeta fabric. What can I expect? Is it that crunchy fabric? Satin is smooth, but I thought taffeta was ‘crunchy’ so what would satin faced taffeta be like? Thanks everyone
You are correct: satin faced taffeta is ‘crunchy’ and smooth.
Satin-faced taffeta will still have that heavier hand – that is, that ‘crunchy’ feel of the goods (the tactile property of the fabric). Satin can be soft, but satin also refers to a high luster (a glossy brilliance) to the weave, so I’d suggest you’ll have a smooth-looking, crunchy fabric, somewhat shiny. Or, in fabric parlance: a lustrous rustle.
When I read, ‘satin-faced taffeta’, it gives me a lot of information which I understand by breaking down the terms. There are times when weaves are refined or new fibers used and seeing and touching a fabric will change the word’s interpretation (or having me asking additional questions when buying online) – but finding basic meanings of combination terms can be done with a Fabric Dictionary.
SATIN: glossy surface on one side, produced by a twill weave with the weft-threads almost hidden.
FACE: the surface of the fabric.
(a fabric weave will product surface textures or superlative lack of texture for smoothness or reflection whereas a ‘face-finish’ of brushing, sanding, sueding etc. provides a variety of matte effects.)
TAFFETA: a lustrous, medium weight, plain weave with a slight ribbed appearance, crisp hand and lots of body.
So you were correct: satin-faced taffeta is a smooth, glossy, russelling, ‘crunchy’ fabric.
For formalwear, taffeta is often a favorite choice because of that ‘body’ that lends itself to manipulation in styling and it’s distinctive sound (I can relate to that “crunch”), In ready-to-wear, we’re often presented with polyester taffeta, which can be very beautiful, but if you ever get an opportunity to hear it in person, silk taffeta does indeed give the ultimate “rustle”.
