Should I pre-wash fabric?
I bought some Kona cotton fabric to make a cape out of. I definitely don’t plan on putting it in the washing machine once I’m done with my project, so do I still need to pre-wash it? I’ll be ironing the fabric out before I start, but I don’t think that’ll cause shrinking…?
I’ll also be making a (costume) dress out of Gabardine, but that won’t be thrown in the machine either. Is washing required anyways?
I don’t have a sewing machine at the moment, but looking to borrow one. So in order to wash, I’d need to wait around until I got my hands on one to zig-zag the raw edges.
Also, my cotton fabric just barely fits the needed amount. I’m afraid it may shrink too much in the wash.
No pre-wash needed, If you don’t plan on putting the finished costume in the washing machine. If you plan on drycleaning it, you might get by without, but normally if you are going to launder after construction, you pre-wash or pre-dry clean fabrics before you cut into them.
Ironing alone does not normally shrink cotton fabric.
If you don’t care about he costume after wearing, then no, you don’t have to pre-wash anything.
