Embroidery Thread

As technology advances our embroidery machines come equipped with more and more wonderful tools to make our embroidery more perfect.
There are embroidery machines that allow you to combine embroidery designs, color sort your designs, rotate embroidery designs, scale and resize your designs.
The hoop sizes on our embroidery machines are incredible now…some large enough to do an entire quilt block in one hooping.
But even with all of this technology, there is still the fear that we might just place our embroidery design(s) incorrectly on our project…What if the designs don’t line up? What if one is slightly angled? What if I do the first 8 embroideries correctly and then there is a problem with the 9th design?
Embroidery Decoupage to the Rescue!
Quite simply put, embroidery decoupage (a name coined by Jenny Haskins) is a technique that allows you to turn almost any embroidery design into a free standing design that can then be stitched to your project in the exact location you would like it to be.
Sew… let’s get started with our new embroidery decoupage technique!
Place one layer of a poly or nylon mesh cut away stabilizer, and one layer of sheer poly or nylon organza, together in your hoop. (Normally the organza goes on top, but it doesn’t really matter)
Use RAYON thread to stitch your design, changing thread colors as you would if you were stitching directly onto your project fabric. Rayon thread will not melt like a polyester thread will, so this is an important part of the embroidery decoupage technique.
When you have finished, you will need to remove the excess stabilizer and organza from around your stitched out design. If your embroidery decoupage design is a simple design, you can cut it away with nice sharp scissors, but the best results are achieved by using a stencil wand. There are a variety of these on the market, many of them packaged with a variety of interchangeable tips. Choose a tip that is narrow and pointy (some even have a curve on them) since this type of tip will give the cleanest edge on your embroidery decoupage design, and it will be the easiest to use. When the stencil wand is hot run it around the edge of your design, and it will melt the nylon or poly stabilizer, but it will not melt your rayon thread.
Note: When using a stencil wand for the embroidery decoupage technique it is important that the threads are clipped from the front and the back of your project prior to using the wand. Remember you used rayon thread, since we did not want the embroidery decoupage design to melt when the stencil wand touches it, so trimming all the threads makes this part of the embroidery decoupage technique go much easier.
Once the excess stabilizer is removed, use a glue stick to put a bit of glue on the back of the embroidered design and place it on your project in the exact location you want it to be.
Next, use a matching thread, or a monofilament thread and your sewing machine to stitch the embroidery design in place.
All that is left now is to enjoy the perfect placement of your embroidery decoupage project!
As the Exclusive Internationally Accredited Jenny Haskins Tutor, I travel across the country teaching classes, and I must say the embroidery decoupage technique is one of the all time favorite classes. How long was golden thread used for embroidery?
A weaver embroidered a cloth with golden thread according to the pattern shown here:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/8974/cloth.gif
The pattern consists of infinitely many yellow circles. Grey circle at the center and six tangent straight lines are NOT a part of the embroidery, they only serve to show how the pattern was constructed. Six large golden circles, and one large grey circle in the center all have diameters equal to 1, and all circles and lines are tangent whenever possible.
If diameter of the bigest circle is 1, then diameters of the smaller circles are 1/4, 1/9, 1/16, 1/25, …, 1/n^2.
Total circumference of one set of circles is:
π*(1+1/4+1/9+1/16+….) = π*π^2/6 = π^3/6
So, because we have 6 sets of circles, total circumference is:
π^3 = 31.00627668…
