What are the strange red dots I see in the dark?
I have been able to do this since I was a little kid. (I’m 19 now) Turn off the lights or close your eyes and cover them with your hands so you’re getting the least amount of light possible. Wait for something to appear, keeping your eyeballs as motionless as possible. Faint, but undeniably, are reddish dots and bubbles flowing about like styrofoam beads in a windy room in your vision.
What exactly am I seeing? Is it comparable to the “sensor noise” you see in digital cameras?
I’m quite sure these are not phosphenes. What I’m seeing are red dots in my entire field of vision, without requiring any “mechanical stimulation” of the retina, and not the blue dots in sparse field described in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphene
Which also doesn’t mention red dots clouding the vision and moving about the field of vision at fairly high speeds.
I can achieve this with no physical manipulation of the eye. I just close my eyes or turn off the lights and there they are
they are called phosphenes.
