There are plenty of ways to make things systematic when it comes to using un-tabbed solar cells for making solar panels. One crucial process to do there is to begin tabbing solar cells. There are several steps involved in this process like choosing the solar cell, cutting of the tabbing wires, tinning and soldering. Following the proper way to tabbing will lessen the hours in doing it. There are also some tips that can be applied to systematize the process.

A solar cell can only produce minimal volume of electricity. However, the purpose of the solar panel is to produce an electrical current that can charge a 12v battery to power home appliances and fixtures. In order to do this, numbers of them should be hooked-up together. Solar cells create negative energy in front and positive energy at the other side. There is a need to attach wires in one cell to the other.

A tabbing wire is used in attaching one cell to another cell. A thin, flat wire can be soldered on them.

In preparation, the following materials are needed:

- solar cell – tabbing wire – solder – soldering iron – ruler – cutting pliers – ruler

Here is the way in tabbing them:

1. Choose the size of the cells to be used. The popular sizes are 3×6 and 4×4.

2. Prepare it by cutting them to the correct length. The right length is the measurement of the two cells. The rationale is, the tabbing wire will be soldered to one cell then there must be an allowable length for stringing to the other cell.

3. Lay down it on a flat surface. A flat glass or ceramic plate can be used.

4. Tin half of the wire in one side in preparation for soldering.

5. Place a flux in the two parallel grooves located at the surface of the cell.

6. Stick the pieces in the two parallel grooves where flux is applied.

7. With the pre-heated soldering iron solder it in the groove of the solar cell.

8. Straighten the remaining half part of the tabbing wire.

Tips in tabbing solar cells:

• In getting the correct measurement of it, lay down two cells in the correct distance. Then, using a ruler measure the length of the two cells.

• Plot the measurement in a piece of wood like a ruler and cut the wood. This will be the guiding template for the length of the tabbing wire.

• Wound around the tabbing wire from end to end of the wood template. Then, release the wounded tabbing wire from the wood template. This will leave a mark on it where to cut it to the correct length.

• Cut the tabbing wire following the folded markings.

• Mark the side of the tabbing wire for tinning. This way the tinning will be limited to the area that is required for tabbing.

• Pre-heat the soldering iron to make a smooth tinning. Keep the hands steady to make a neat solder.

Upon completion in tabbing solar cells, there is now a way to connect solar cells together to produce the required volume of electric current.
