I was making homemade handwarmers for Christmas presents and the fabric caught fire.?
I found the cutest idea for homemade Christmas presents online. Getting a cute warm fabric and making a small pouch and filing it with pie weights and you just heat it up in the microwave and keep one in each of your jacket pockets to keep your hands warm. Well, i found the cutest flanel fabric at Wal Mart and made my first pair of handwarmers. I put it in the microwave for one mnute and everythinig was fine, but it was not very warm so i put it in for 3 minutes and it smelt burnt and i saw where the side of the pouch and caught fire and turned black and was torn. I dont know what to do because its such a cute idea and i already spent the money on the materials i need. Any advice?
Never have used pie weights for this (the ones I know of are metal, and probably not a good choice for a microwave), but I have done something similar with plain white rice.
If you heat something long enough in a microwave, it will catch fire. Increasing the heating from one to three minutes was probably your big mistake here — I would have taken it up in 10 second increments
until warm enough.
