What is a good alternative to using cherry lumber when building, in particular a wine cabinet?
I am looking for something more cost effective, but with similar characteristics of cherry. Thank you.
Every wood has its own grain and “look”. But Birch with the right stain is good. Much cheaper than Cherry. But some people like Mahogany. Many mistake it for Cherry because of the red stain commonly used on Cherry. The grain is completely different. I have even seen ( and used ) Alder to make some good looking cabinetry. Often has an interesting pattern to it.
Edit: I hate it when somebody else gives a better answer than me. Oil field does have a good suggestion. Hardwood plywood with solid trim is and has been the way to go. But if you do, use the good ply wood not the stuff that is softwood with veneer. Costs more, looks the same but it is stronger.
