Bamboo has experienced a tremendous explosion in popularity as environmental concerns and resource management have become the hottest consumer topics of the day. This woody perennial matures in less than seven years and can grow as much as 48 inches in a 24 hour period. These tree-like “grasses”, which thrive in the forests of Southeast Asia, can grow to heights of 75 feet with trunk diameters up to 14 inches.

Botanical classification aside, Bamboos’ uniqueness lies in factors that include its renewability and sustainability; its strength and hardness; its multiple uses as a food staple for humans and animals, a building material, cabinetry and flooring construction material, and household goods component material. As a highly renewable resource, Bamboo is a durable, stable and attractive material that does not impact the worlds timber resources when harvested. Commonly acknowledged for strength and durability that rivals most hardwood species, Bamboo has been used in the flooring industry for many years and only recently has become very popular for “green” projects in the cabinet manufacturing industry. Extremely low expansion and contraction rates provide a dimensional stability that outperforms the most popular wood species used in cabinetry and furniture. This stability provides an advantage in environments where moisture levels are higher than normal or rapid changes in the moisture levels are very common.

Bamboo has a tight grain appearance with narrow staves and naturally occurring specks and burl-like nodes. The dense cellular structure of Bamboo results in an even consistent finish with a more uniform end grain. In its natural state, Bamboo ranges in color from creamy white to yellow and dark green, to black and gray. Popular color selections for Bamboo kitchen cabinets include the natural blond color and a slightly warmer, deep amber tone induced by “caramelizing” or steaming the bamboo cane. This process darkens the sugar compounds in the fiber and gives the bamboo its unique richness. The cell structure and absorption rates of Bamboo allow for a high quality application of finish materials in a spectrum of colors that will complement virtually any home décor.

Since Bamboo stalks are hollow and narrow, they must be sliced into strips and glued together to make Bamboo “planks”. Variation in the “planking” creates Bamboos’ unique grain orientation and overall appearance. These distinct lines and graining striations create clean, contemporary and transitional design options in either raised panel, recessed panel, or slab door styles.

While Bamboo epitomizes the perfect renewable resource, environmentally conscious consumers should be aware of emissions from adhesives and finish materials used in the processing of Bamboo flooring, cabinetry and furniture. To preserve the eco-friendly qualities and inherent traits of Bamboo, manufacturers must utilize adhesives with “no-added urea formaldehyde” and finish materials that emit little or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) during the manufacturing process. When accomplished, Bamboo products are the most environmentally sound products available.
