Is it a crime against art to paint on black velvet?

I’m trying to create a mixed media artwork, where part of it is black felt, and I painted it, but now it looks like a painting on black velvet and I wonder if I need to chuck it and start over. What if this starts a downward spiral into painting crying clowns and cats dressed as Shakespeare? I would like what I did though if it didn’t look like bad motel art and make me feel so stigmatized. Help I’m so confused.

It REALLY depends on what you did on the black felt. I know pastellists who work on velvet finished papers, and they sell black gesso to tone canvases, for gosh sakes!

However, the classical reason for avoiding pure black grounds is that black as a color is “dead’ as it gives no light to the painting. Now, if you use that property correctly, painting on black anything can be very exciting and can turn out very well indeed.

I don’t think I have seen many multi-media Elvises or bull fighters, etc . . . so I think you are safe!
